Canada Winter Games
Congratulations to all our athletes who represented Alberta proudly at the 2015 Canada Winter Games! Their successes earned a total of six medals (one gold, two silver, three bronze).
We had Thirteen very talented athletes competing for Alberta at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, BC from February 13 - March 1. Check out their athlete profiles below:

Favorite place to ski: Raven, Spruce view, AB
Favorite thing about skiing: I love traveling and racing at different places.
Least favorite thing about skiing: Losing a ski during a race.
Most painful skiing experience: Racing at Canmore, Haywood Noram. Taking the lead for the first kilometer, and not knowing I had 15 crazy hills I had to climb. Yes, I died at the end.
Best Skiing Experience: Qualifying for the Canada Winter Games. Yahoo!!!
How many years you have been skiing: 14
Which athlete inspires you the most? Beckie Scott
Favorite movie: Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
Favorite junk food: I don’t eat junk food.
Dreams and Aspirations: I would like to race a World Cup someday, and I hope to race at the Olympics too!
Anything else that you want to Share?
Qualifying for the CWG has been the most exciting challenge in my skiing career so far. I am still shocked that I qualified, and I can’t wait to compete and represent Alberta at the Games. I know this experience will be life changing!
How Long have you Been Skiing: A little over one year
Favorite Place to Ski: Strathcona Wilderness Center
Favorite thing About Skiing: The outdoors and all the challenges that come along with this sport
Skiing Highlight: Having the opportunity to attend the World’s Championship in Cable,Wisconsin this February. Additionally, having had the opportunity to attend the Nationals
Sport you do in the off-season: Hand-cycling
Favorite thing to eat after training: Normally a smoothie, but I’ve also been known to eat an entire box of toaster waffles on occasion
Favorite spandex company: Definitely Borah
Worst skiing experience: Falling three times in a 500m sprint, though that’s pretty hilarious when I think about it now
Best skiing experience:Seeing my coach drive up with giant box of donuts at the four hour mark on an epic roller-ski in Park City, Utah.
Also, medalling at nationals is pretty sweet as well.
Sport you do in the off season:

Role Model: I have a hard time choosing between Marit Bjoergen, the entirety of the U.S. national team, and my teammates.
Favorite movie: Just go with it
Favorite Junk food: Black Licorice!
Dreams/goals: To get everything I possibly can out of skiing (and life). Whether that means competing at the Olympics, University skiing or tootling around when I’m 98 years old!
Favorite thing to eat after a race: Pasta and fruit
Favorite brand of spandex: Mt. Borah
Favorite place to ski: The Great Divide (1A)
Favorite thing about skiing: Skiing allows you to be fit in many other sports without even training for them.
Least favorite thing about skiing: Having to go outside in really cold temperatures.
Most painful skiing experience (i.e- coldest race/practice you had to push through, the race you totally got your ass handed to you at, the most impressive crash…etc): Hasn’t happened yet… but I’m sure it is coming.
Best skiing experience (i.e- race you are most proud of, best training session you ever had…etc): Qualifying for the Canada Winter Games
Sport you do in the off-season: Triathlons and Competitive Swimming
How many years you have been skiing: Skate Skiing: 5 years - Classic Skiing: 2 years

Favorite movie: Any Harry Potter Movie….
Favorite junk food: Pizza and Crave Cupcakes. Life isn’t complete without them…
Dreams and aspirations: To one day represent Canada in Biathlon at the Olympics.
Anything else that you want to share?
I’m actually a biathlete, but when I was a year too young to qualify for CWG in biathlon, I tried out in Cross Country instead!
Favorite thing to eat after a race: granola bars or nothing

Most painful skiing experience Classic race at Quebec Nationals when it was +200C in the middle of the day.

Sport you do in the off-season: Mountain Biking, Running, Hiking, Rollerskiing
How many years you have been skiing: 5 years competitively

Favorite movie: Forest Gump
Favorite junk food: Chocolate
Dreams and aspirations: Skiing for Canada at an international event
Favorite thing to eat after a race: Gatorade and finish line cookies!
Favorite brand of spandex: Mt.Borah
Favorite place to ski: Hard to decide… it’s a tie between Sovereign Lakes and crust skiing on the Sunshine meadows!
Favorite thing about skiing: That I get to spend time outside every day and that I get to stay fit and healthy!
Least favorite thing about skiing: Cleaning off klister… although I love racing in klister conditions!
Most painful skiing experience: Pushing through summer or fall training sessions in the cold rain. It takes a lot of determination and motivation from my teammates or coaches to help push through those training sessions.
Best skiing experience : The race that I have been the most proud of recently was the classic sprint at World Junior trials in Duntroon. That was a very important race for me, and I put a lot of pressure on myself for it, but I was able to go out and give it everything!
Sport you do in the off-season: Cross country running, road and mountain biking, and hiking Canmore’s beautiful mountains.
How many years you have been skiing: 15
Which athlete inspires you the most? Sara Renner and Beckie Scott!
Favorite movie: The Incredibles. I think I know every line to that movie by now.
Favorite junk food: This isn’t really junk food, but I absolutely love cinnamon buns!
Dreams and aspirations: To medal at the Olympic Games or World Championships and to have a great time along the way!
Anything else that you want to share?
-I grew up on a small farm outside of Athabasca, Alberta, where we had cows, chickens, and sometimes horses.
-I have read all of the Harry Potter books more times than I can count.
Favorite thing to eat after a race: Sugar, doesn’t matter what kind it is. (Chocolate, candy, coke etc.)
Favorite brand of spandex: Swix. Without a doubt the most comfortable race suit around
Favorite place to ski: Praz de Lys or Lake Louise
Favorite thing about skiing: Get to travel the world and ski. Racing is also quite fun
Least favorite thing about skiing: Breaking poles
Most painful skiing experience: A mountain bike race I did a couple of years ago in Canmore in half a foot of snow and minus 5. I don’t think I have ever been that cold.
Best skiing experience: Racing in Lake Louise this winter was pretty incredible
Sport you do in the off-season: Mountain and Road biking, hiking, running, climbing
How many years you have been skiing: 16

Favorite movie: Always a toss-up between Star Wars and Lord of the Rings
Favorite junk food: Chocolate cake
Dreams and aspirations: As long as I am still having fun I will keep skiing

Favorite place to ski: Mt. Shark
Least favorite thing about skiing: Klister!
Best skiing experience: Classic sprint at the 2013 Nationals in Whistler. Everything really came together, I felt good, I skied well, and I placed 2nd!
Sport you do in the off-season: High School field hockey
How many years you have been skiing: 12
Favorite movie: Lord of the Rings
Favorite junk food: Starburst
Dreams and aspirations: Race on the World Cup circuit. Travel all over the place.
Anything else that you want to share?
I had a pretty wicked crash in the classic race at Westerns this year, but somehow I managed not to hurt myself at all! Sadly, my glasses didn’t survive…
When I was 11, my family travelled for a year. We drove from Calgary to Patagonia in a Volkswagen van.
One year when I was in Jackrabbits (not sure which level), I decided that the BEST thing you could ever do on skis was to tackle our group’s coach and sit on him… It got old after a few weeks.
Favorite thing to eat after a race: A banana and chocolate milk.
Favorite brand of spandex: Every brand, spandex is just the loveliest.
Favorite place to ski: Whistler, BC.
Favorite thing about skiing: Pushing your body and mind to their absolute limits.
Least favorite thing about skiing: Sprint heats, they’re ever so stressful…
Most painful skiing experience: I went into the classic 7.5km at Whistler Nationals in 2013 with only base binder on my skis, and practically double poled the whole thing. It’s what I now like to call a “character race,” although I didn’t have such an optimistic outlook at the time…
Best skiing experience: Canada Winter Games trials in 2014, I didn’t come into the trials expecting to get a spot on the team, but due to a few strong efforts I won two of the three selection races that weekend and was named the top male on Team Alberta to compete at the games.
Sport you do in the off-season: Running, cycling, rollerskiing.
How many years you have been skiing: 12
Which athlete inspires you the most? Jess Cockney.
Favorite movie: Interstellar.
Favorite junk food: S’mores!!
Dreams and aspirations: To go to veterinary school and work with animals as a career, all shapes and sizes.
Anything else that you want to share?
I’m a very musical person, I play the cello, guitar, and piano. I play cello in two bands, and oftentimes I like to jam with my violinist teammate Luke Gerwing, we come up with some pretty crazy/awesome stuff
